Pandesal

Pandesal is the most popular and favorite bread in the Philippines. Usually served in breakfast and also as merienda.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1/4 cup milk powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon yeast
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup butter unsalted
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, Combine bread flour, milk powder and salt.
  2. In a medium bowl, Mix sugar and warm water, Sprinkle yeast and slightly stir to combine. Let stand for 5 minutes until the mixture is foamy. Make sure the water is warm and not hot or else it will kill the yeast.

  3. Once the yeast mixture is foamy, Add into the flour mixture then knead until it forms a dough. Add the softened butter little by little while kneading, continue until it becomes smooth and shiny, About 5-10 minutes. It will become sticky at this stage, just knead until the butter is fully incorporated and smooth. Dough may be a bit sticky or tacky after kneading. 

  4. Form the dough into a round ball and place in a a lightly greased bowl and coat the dough with little oil. Cover the dough and let it rise until it doubles in size, About 1 hour.
  5. Gently punch down dough then divide into 2 and roll each into a long log.

  6. Rest the dough for 10 minutes then then cut 16 pieces of dough in each log. Total of 32 pieces on both logs. Around 1.5cm wide each pieces.

  7. Roll each pandesal pieces into breadcrumbs to coat and place in the baking sheet about 1 inch apart. Cover with a cloth and allow to rise for about 1 or until double in size
  8. Bake in a 350 F preheat oven for 15 minutes.
  9. Serve hot and Enjoy!
