Hotteok

Hotteok is a popular korean street snack. A korean version of pancake with sugar syrup filling inside is indeed sweet and chewy that you'll surely enjoy anytime of the day.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup glutinous rice flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil

Filling

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablepoons chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, Add sugar and warm water and stir until sugar dissolved. Sprinkle over the yeast, whisk lightly and set aside for 5 minutes until the yeast starts to get foamy.

  2. In a mixing bowl, Combine all purpose flour, glutinous rice flour and salt. Add the oil and yeast-sugar-water mixture. Slowly stir until combined a dough is formed. At this stage the dough is sticky and sloppy.

  3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or damp cloth let it rise until it doubles in size, about an hour.
  4. After an hour, Punch the dough to deflate annd let it rise again for another 30 minutes.
  5. Transfer the dough to floured work surface using 1/2 cup flour and coat your hands with flour. In order to keep your dough from sticking on your work surface and hands.
  6. Form the dough, Divide the into 8 pieces and shape each into a ball.
  7. Flatten each ball and put about 1-2 tablespoon of the filling in the center then seal the dough by pinching edges together around the filling forming into a ball.
  8. Over medium heat, Heat a nonstick skillet with 1-2 tablespoons of oil.
  9. Place the dough ball on skillet with the sealed side down and cook for about 30 seconds.
  10. Then flip it over and press down the dough ball. Around 5 inches wide circle. Cook for about 1 minute until the bottom is golden brown.

  11. Flip to the other side again and cover the skillet cook until both sides are golden brown. About 20 seconds.

  12. Repeat the process with the remaining dough.
