Soft and Buttery Dinner Rolls
Ingredients
- 3 cups bread flour or all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 large egg room temperature
- 1/4 cup butter softened, cubed
- extra melted butter for brushing on top
Egg Wash Mixture
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
-
In a large bowl, Combine salt and flour and set aside.
-
Mix evaporated milk, warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast and slightly stir. Let it sit for 5 minutes until you see bubbles.
-
Make a well in the flour mixture. Then add the egg, butter and yeast mixture in the center. Mix until it forms a dough. The dough is still soft and sticky at this stage.
-
Transfer into a lighty floured surface and knead until it becomes smooth and elastic and not sticky anymore. If the dough bounces back immediately when lightly pressed with your finger or doesn’t tears when you pull it, it is ready to rise.
-
Form the dough into a ball and transfer to a lightly greased baking dish. Cover the dough with a towel or plastic wrap and let it rise until it doubles in size, About 1 hour.
-
After an hour, punch down to deflate the dough and divide into 16 pieces and shape into balls.
-
Place the rolls to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet or 9×13 baking dish. Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let rise for 1 hour.
-
For egg wash mixture, Whisk egg and milk in a small bowl just to blend.
-
After an hour, Lightly brush the top of the rolls with egg wash. Be careful not to poke the dough so it won't deflate.
-
Bake for 20 minutes in 350°F (177°C) preheated oven, until the rolls have golden browned. If the top of rolls brown too quickly, just cover the rolls with aluminum foil.
-
Remove rolls from the oven and brush with melted butter. Allow to cool or serve immediately.
Recipe Notes
Note:
- Using a glass baking pan won’t brown the bottom and sides of the rolls quickly.
- This recipe makes 16 medium dinner rolls. If you want smaller one, divide the dough into 32 pieces.
- Always preheat the oven in 350°F (177°C) for 10 minutes before you bake the rolls.
- Put the baking dish at the bottom or second layer of the oven so that the top of the rolls won’t brown quickly.
